Curriculum and Professional Development
Message from the Curriculum Coordinator

My name is Dr. Maria Briones and I am the new Curriculum Coordinator/ Professional Development advisor.  At the heart of any school, curriculum and instruction provides the focus of content, the teaching of skills and strategies, the reflective critical thinking opportunities, and the vibrancy of learning. With a solid core of instruction, coupled with the dedication and expertise of teachers, your children will learn to succeed through hard work and will develop into thoughtful young adults who will be ready to take on life’s next challenges. Our school is world class because of your amazing children who come to school with smiles on their faces and interest in their harts. It is a great pleasure to be working at the American International School of Jeddah.

Throughout the year it is my hope to chronicle the best teaching practices of our teachers through school bulletin letters to you.  Expect to read stories from classroom teachers about how units of study develop and what best practice teaching strategies are used. Student reflections throughout units of study will show how learning can continue through “thinking about thinking” interviews.  I know you will enjoy reading about students’ and teachers’ learning experiences.

The 2007-2008 Curriculum Coordinator Goals:

  1. To provide professional development for teachers to know and clearly use a well-articulated curriculum.
  2. To help teachers explore educational research and best practice instructional techniques to help all teachers learn to their best potential.
  3. To provide current technology training for a school wide transition to the Atlas Rubicon Curriculum software management program.
  4. To demonstrate or team teach in-class workshops in order to assist teachers with best practice instruction techniques.
  5. To organize task force teams across domains and develop a two year action plan as part of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation  process.
  6. To modify the five year text book adoption plan so that domain areas receive new texts every five years. This plan begins now with new texts for middle and high school math and language Arts.

Sincerely, Dr. Maria Briones
